Red Dawn Review

Words Claire Bueno

Admittedly I knew nothing of the original 1980’s film Red Dawn starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. So when I sat down to watch this re-boot I did so with an open mind that enabled me to enjoy this action packed film that was full of surprises!

The story sees our lead Jed Eckert played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Avengers, Snow White and the Huntsman) on annual leave from the marines. He awakes in his family home to an unusual noise. He and his brother Matt Eckert played by Josh Peck (Ice Age) step out side to witness an invasion by North Korean troupes. Without hesitation Jed, his brother and a few friends make an escape, which is not without its thrills! Retreating to the woods, Jed leads and trains the youths as they wage their own war on these unwanted visitors in an attempt to reclaim their town.

Firstly, I think Hemsworth was excellently cast not only is he able to play these physical roles with ease but he also brings an emotional depth to the character that a lesser actor could not have pulled off. Every film needs conflict and whilst the band of merry men known as ‘The Wolverines’ put their new found skills to good use with bombs, shootings and all the great thrills we expect from an action movie what I particularly enjoyed was exploring the conflict between the two brothers and how we see that we are accountable for our actions.

Red Dawn contains great and exciting action sequences, with enjoyable performances that we as an audience do invest in. All in all I came away feeling thoroughly entertained!

RED DAWN is released in cinemas 15th March 2013
