One of the greatest British films of all time, Tony Richardson’s, Academy Award© winning, TOM JONES, starring Albert Finney, celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The 1963 British film was a critically acclaimed box office hit.  Tom Jones went on to win four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Original Score and is still upheld as a landmark piece of British filmmaking.  It’s director, Tony Richardson was voted by the BFI as one of the greatest British filmmakers of the Twentieth Century. Richardson’s illustrious body of work includes the ground-breaking and genre defining titles: Look Back in Anger; Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner; A Taste of Honey and The Entertainer starring Laurence Olivier in one of his most powerful performances. These cinematic gems are all part of the classic Woodfall Film Library.
TOM JONES is an adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic novel and is a rousing, bawdy comedy about a young man's ribald adventures in 18th-century England, Albert Finney is splendidly hilarious in the title role of a charming womanizer. An international hit, the film was written by acclaimed playwright, John Osborne and noted for its unusual comic style often breaking the forth wall to include the audience.  For the 1989 reissue/restoration, the director trimmed approx. 7 minutes from the original.

Woodfall Film Productions were synonymous with the new British cinema of the sixties, pioneers of the new ‘Kitchen Sink’ dramas and launched the careers of some of the best British actors and directors of our time.
