Hammer hits the nail on the head as the The Quiet Ones is released on Blu-ray and DVD

I would say as a genre horror is not on the top of my list of films, leaning definitely more towards a fan of thrillers, but when I was asked to review the latest creation by Hammer I jumped at the chance. You can't help but feel nostalgic about the original Hammer films starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee but the new generation of Hammer films produced by Simon Oakes and Guy East have raised the bar and are nothing short of superb. Films like  vampire flick LET ME IN (English adaptation of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN) and THE WOMEN IN BLACK adapted from the Susan Hill book and West End play starring Harry Potter leading man Daniel Radcliffe have helped establish Hammer as a brand of filmmaking in which you can trust to have intelligent writing, flawless performances and of course give you a real scare and THE QUIET ONES continues to fly the flag of their success.

THE QUIET ONES is inspired by true events of 1972's 'Philip Experiment' in Toronto Canada; though our  story starts in Oxford University. After our scientists are unceremoniously evicted for their unorthodox methods of experimentation they are forced to take residence in a dilapidated country estate to continue their work. Their 'work' is a subject called Jane Harper tormented by a mental illness. The intention of our team of scientists is  to uncover that Jane's affliction is nothing more than negative mental energy, which once determined can easily be removed thanks to the powers of science .... But what happens when science fails to provide answers to the unexplainable and other powers could be in force?!

I found THE QUIET ONES spine tingling, suspenseful and utterly chilling - great! I loved the writing, I was totally immersed in the story, it was intelligent and it made you think; it was not hard to fall deeper and deeper and wonder and dread what might happen next. Couple that with flawless performances then you're onto a winner. Jared Harris (Mad Men, Lincoln) is so convincing as the multi dimensional Professor Coupland who heads our band of merry scientists played by Erin Richards (Breaking In) and Rory Fleck-Byrne (Stealaway). Completing the team is the timid and conflicted videographer Brian McNeil played very sympathetically by Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games). Not forgetting our 'experiment' Jane Harper played by Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) whose haunting performance is utterly mesmerising.

I loved how the story explores the complexity of the relationships between all these people when working in such intense proximity. The film cleverly makes you question who can you really trust? And what really are the motives of every member of the team?

Of course it would be remiss of me not to congratulate the sound and visual effects teams with their less is more approach,  complimenting the story and providing the finishing touches to create a wonderfully crafted film helmed by director John Pogue.

THE QUIET ONES is guaranteed to give you a sleepless night - what else could you ask from a Horror!

THE QUIET ONES is out on Blu-ray and DVD now

Non-Stop Review

After Taken you can’t help but get enthusiastic when you hear Liam Neeson is going to be headlining an action movie. He is an actor with immense gravitas on and off screen and in Non-Stop Neeson certainly knows how to grab an audience.

In honesty the film is not without flaws, there are moments in the third act where I wasn’t sure whether a few one liners were meant to be funny or that the dialogue had been poorly written as I don’t remember a comedic tone being established earlier in the film. That being said I am a lover of whodunnits’ and I was constantly held in suspense and the fact that I failed to guess perpetrator makes that a BIG tick in the box! There are moments where I was completely absorbed and I do enjoy seeing how creative one can be with a story when the location is confined to one location which in this case is an aeroplane.

So if you’re in the mood for Non-Stop suspense, Non-Stop action and Non-Stop Neeson then make the cinema your first stop!

Non-Stop lands in cinemas 28th February
